Walking away from hurricane-prone homes

|

I was in the process of renovating my house in Jacksonville when a hurricane hit the area.

  • I was able to afford a condo along the St… Johns river because it had been left vacant for quite a few years.

There were portions of the roof that had collapsed, electrical wiring that didn’t meet local codes and signs of rodent infestation. Termites had eaten away at the back porch and none of the appliances were reusable. The apartment needed a new water heater, Heating, Ventilation, and A/C system, refrigerator, stove, washer and dryer. Even the light fixtures, plumbing fixtures and outlets needed replacement. The floor rotted in places and several of the windows were broken. I had hopes of fixing up the apartment gradually, I was renting a home at the time and planned to handle the majority of the tasks myself. I diagnosed the apartment after my workday during the week and on the weekends. I invested every available cent into building materials, tools and appliances. The apartment was just starting to become livable when the St. Johns river overflowed its banks and flooded the property. Dirty water poured into the house and caused extensive detriment. At one point, there was nearly four feet of water inside the house. Even when the water receded, there was a good deal of dirt and a foul odor. Plus, the moisture created concerns with mold and mildew growth. I simply couldn’t face starting over again. I contacted a currency homebuyer that makes offers on all types of properties. The currency buyer doesn’t require an inspection. I filled out a contact form online and earned a currency offer within an hour. Once I accepted the offer, the closing was completed in under two weeks.
